Prospective Players

Playing hockey for the University of Florida is a great opportunity. By joining the team you are able to play competitive hockey on the college level, travel throughout the Southeast United States, and hit the ice over 35 times a season.

The hockey team at UF is a club sport. This means that we do not have tryouts and that anyone interested in playing is encouraged to come out.  With that said, the team must only dress 20 players for games, and the top players will be the ones getting ice time. To be a part of the team is completely free, however, there are travel costs associated with the team that vary by season.

The University of Florida ice hockey team has a 6-month long season that runs from the middle of September until March. The season consists of roughly 20-25 games played on weekends. Jacksonville Ice is the home rink for the Gators. This rink is roughly an hour and 15 minutes from Gainesville.

Ice practices are on Wednesday nights from 8:30 – 10:00. Off-ice practices are on Monday and Tuesday nights at 8:00pm. Off-ice consists of strength and endurance conditioning, going over game play situations, and increasing hockey knowledge/skills.

All players must meet the requirements laid out by the American Collegiate Hockey Association and the University of Florida to be able to play in games. This means that all players must be taking 12 credits at the University of Florida, the student must maintain a 2.0 cumulative college GPA, and be working towards a baccalaureate, masters, or doctorate degree. To practice with the team you must be a full time student or a faculty member of the University of Florida.

If you are a current student at UF or looking to attend in the next few years and wish to join the Florida Hockey program, send an email to team president Shane Fitzpatrick.
